Joseph Palmeri of Tulsa – Most Common Anesthesia Side Effects

Joseph Palmeri of Tulsa, a highly professional and well respected anesthesiologist works hard to make sure his patients are comfortable with the procedure they will be undergoing. Joseph Palmeri of Tulsa also believes that even if you are not his patient, there are some side effects that you should be aware of when coming out from being under the influence of anesthesia.

  1. The most common side effect is post operative nausea and vomiting. Approximately half of all patients experience nausea and vomiting within a few days after the procedure. Many experience it in the hospital, but most people who experience it, do so after they are at home. If you have a history of nausea and vomiting after surgery in the past the anesthesiologist will likely give you one or more drugs in addition to the anesthesia which can assist in reducing the nausea and vomiting. If they do not give it to you before the surgery, they may give it to you afterwards. Be sure to discuss with your anesthesiologist.
  2. Shivering and the chills are the second most common side effect and can occur in between 25% to 50% of all patients. It will normally occur after anesthesia is administered during the post-operative phase of the anesthesia. It is impossible to completely prevent it once it has begun, however there are a few drugs which sometimes work to treat and/or prevent it.
  3. Joseph Palmeri of Tulsa says that the 3rd most common after effect is having a sore throat. This happens in up to 40% of patients.  If you need general anesthesia then there is no real way to prevent it however the anesthesiologist can lessen it by choosing a device to help you breathe during surgery that is smaller. Freezing Medication and anti-inflammatories  can also be beneficial in some patients.
Joseph Palmeri of Tulsa, says that of you have a history of any of these side effects you stand a better chance of having them again and to let your anesthesiologist and doctor know so they can create a plan limit and/or treat the side effect after surgery.
